Patricia Urquiola Hidalgo (1961): an architect and designer born in Oviedo, Spain, in the Asturias region, though she has Basque origins. The figurative and material elements of her culture of origin are strongly present in her works. Yet, her production blossomed in Italy, where she studied. Urquiola initially studied architecture, first at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, then Politecnico di Milano, where she graduated in 1989 with Achille Castiglioni. He convinced her to shift to product design, and Urquiola claims to have inherited from him an analog design approach, by which an object recalls or represents another object. She has designed, for In Y/Our Life, the “Tree Of Gifts”, a one-of-a-kind piece that will host the “Artist Gifts” – the results of creative collaborations with the brands. Each visitor will be free to take one, thus becoming the owner of a unique souvenir of this exhibition experience.
